Should Gay Marriage Be Legalized?
Attention/Introduction
Attention Getter. How would you feel if you were told that you will not be able to get married to the person you love? In our current society, many people are not able to get married to their partners because of their sexuality. According to statistics, there are approximately 5.6% of people worldwide who are gay, lesbian or bisexual. About 8.8million of them are residing in the USA. Millions or even billions of these people may not get a chance to get married to their life partners just because gay marriage is prohibited in their country or state.
Credibility. You will get upset if you do not get to marry the person you love dearly and who loves you too. We all should understand the pain and cruelty of this feeling. That is why I have done this speech on this important subject.
Preview/Thesis. I would like to explain why gay marriage should be legalized, what impact it will bring and what do we need to do about it.
Transition: If two people truly love each other, shouldn’t they be entitled the same rights, privileges or responsibilities regardless of their genders?
Need
“Everybody deserves the rights to be married to someone you love.” Tell that to the straight community, they will agree. But what about the gay community, are they included and part of the “Everybody”? Surely they too are entitled to be married to the person they love. Getting married to a partner for the rest of your life is not a privilege; it is a basic human right.
You may argue that a gay couple can just be together happily without getting married. But think about it, imagine this scenario:
John and Joe are committed to each other, they live together and they feel just like a married couple. BUT they do not have legal rights like that of the legally married couples. If John were to be ill and be hospitalized, Joe will not be guaranteed the rights to be able to stay in the hospital with John. And if John were to die, his inheritance will definitely not go to Joe, but it will definitely go somewhere else for example, a distant family member.
This is the importance of the marriage. It is not just a piece of paper, it is a piece of paper that entitles rights, privileges and responsibilities held by two person who has vowed to be there for each other till death do them part.
“Letting gay people get married will risk the birth of new generations.” – This is totally untrue. Whether or not gay people get married, it will not affect the birth rates. The birth rate will not drop or rise as even if gay people do not get married to each other, they will most probably not get married to straight people and have babies with them either. Therefore, gay marriages do not affect the birth of new generations at all. As a matter of fact, many straight couples nowadays opt to not have babies in their family, blame them, and leave the gay people out of it.
Some religions criticize homosexual activities. But they should understand that religion in the current society is a choice. And by choice, we as humans have the rights to choose if we are to be conformed by it. A marriage is between two person, not with two person plus all the statues and gods their would-be neighbors will have.
Just because it is different does not mean it is wrong. It may be unusual seeing two males or two females getting married on the aisle but it is definitely not wrong. To think otherwise is purely prejudice at work. If you see a child who is born with defects, will you say he is different or will you say he is wrong? What will we be teaching the younger generations if we set the example that whatever is different means wrong?
Legalizing gay marriage can open up a whole new culture and community whereby people will learn to be more tolerable or even get to understand the gay community more. Many gay individual are constantly under threats and pressure by their surroundings and environments, having these rights to get married, they can show others and themselves that they aren’t really that different from the hetero community.
Transition: It is not a matter of whether if it is two lesbians getting married or if it is a heterosexual couple getting married, what truly matters is that it is two people who love each other dearly getting married.
Satisfaction
We can help achieve this possibility. Starting from simply opening our hearts to the gay community, accepting and acknowledging that they too deserve the rights straight people have.
Petition for gay rights, everybody deserves to get married. Educate people; let them know about the situation, that many people are not able to get married just because they are a gay couple.
Transition: A blessing unto others will too become a blessing unto you.
Visualization
Gay people will be able to share the same basic human rights and marry the person they love.
People will probably be able to look at gay people in a more different and more positive light as they will be able to get married like the rest.
Gay couples may opt to adopt children, which may help with the orphan situations.
Commitment will reduce the risk of STDs in the gay community.
Gay couples starting a family will also boost sales in housing, insurance and etc.
Transition: Acceptance is a truly important and essential value we all should have in current times, without it, how human can we call ourselves human?
Action/Conclusion
Review: Today, I’ve covered you about why gay marriage should be legalized and what can you do to help with the situation.
I am asking you to open your hearts, and open others’ hearts and start accepting people regardless of their orientation.
Closure: It is such a simple and small thing to do, just be accepting and maybe in time, gay marriage will finally be legalized when society is ready for it. Will you be able to open your hearts?
